BROWN'S YOUNG CHEF STRIKES GOLD

A talented young West Devon chef has shown his true potential after winning a regional cooking competition.

Ramone Burton, who is a chef de partis at Brown's Hotel and Restaurant in Tavistock, won the young professional class in the South West Chef of the Year competition - at 17, he was the youngest of the four finalists.

He wowed the judges with his dishes, which included ingredients selected from each of the South West counties - seared Falmouth Bay scallops with a cauliflower puree, braised wild mushrooms and crisp Dorset ham for the starter followed by a breast of Somerset honey-glazed Devon duck, confit leg, potato rosti and Wiltshire cider jus.

The Judges included Michelin chef Michael Caines from Gidleigh Park, Chagford, the Tanner Brothers from Plymouth, Peter Gorton from The Horn of Plenty and Richard Guest from The Castle, Taunton. The young professional class covered the 16 to 22 age range.

Ramone said it was 'amazing' to have won: 'I was really nervous cooking in front of the five chefs but it all went really well and it's a great achievement for me.'
