Tavistock enters WMN Food Competition

TAVISTOCK EatWise Campaign featured at Plymouth Food Festival

The Western Morning News backed competition for the Best Local Food Award was represented at the Plymouth Food Fest last weekend. Competition organiser, Chris Bradford offered competitors a chance to promote their entries on his stand. The Food Fest event attracted 100,000 visitors over the weekend.

Tavistock EatWise Campaign members produced a special flier for the occasion which will also be used to inspire visitors and residents alike to the benefits of eating locally produced food from Tavistock and the surrounding area.

What the Judges will look for ...

Judges of the Best Local Food Awards will be evaluating communities on the following criteria:-

  • Evidence of support for local producers through the medium of farmers' markets, pannier markets,
    WI country markets.

  • Shops displaying local produce.

  • Restaurants, hotels and pubs publicising the use of local produce on their menus.

  • The presence of any organisations whose aim is to
provide a link between local producers and the community.

  • The existence of food and drink festivals or celebrations in the community based on local produce.

  • Institutions such as schools, hospitals, residential care homes, committed to using a proportion of fresh local produce in well-prepared and nutritious meals.

  • Any commitment on the part of the local civic body, chamber of commerce, village hall committees, to promoting local produce (in catering for functions, special events, work canteens etc.)

The judging will not begin until November 1, giving entrants time to organise their entry.

Chris Bradford, project co-ordinator, said: "We recommend that communities establish a 'competition committee' to represent all the interested parties and to maximise the impact of their entry.

Between May, 2005, and March 31, 2006, the Western Morning News will select communities from the list of entrants, and run feature articles highlighting their involvement with the Buy Local campaign. Judging will be completed by March 31, 2006.

'Best Local Food Awards 2005'

A new competition is being run for communities of all sizes across the Westcountry (Cornwall, Devon, South Somerset and West Dorset) to recognise those who are giving active and effective support to local food and drink producers.

Tavistock
EatWise has entered the competition and is currently working hard to ensure that Tavistock gets further recognition for its local food achievements.
